Aurangabad is known for Mashru and Himroo fabrics made of cotton and silk with the lustre of satin. Himru is an age-old weaving craft, and was originally known as kum khuab. These fabrics are an inspiration to many designers thus making them very sought-after globally. Aurangabad is also known for Bidri work or metal crafts, and the nearby town of Paithan is known for the world-famous Paithan silk, which is considered to be one of the richest sarees in India.
Learning Outcomes
- Gain an understanding of the rich historical and cultural heritage of Aurangabad, exploring the influences of Mughal and Maratha history on local art and fashion.
- Explore traditional textiles and crafts unique to the region, such as Paithani silk, Himroo fabric, and Bidriware.
- Understand the craftsmanship involved in these traditional art forms and their relevance to contemporary fashion.
- Explore the relationship between heritage conservation and fashion, understanding how the preservation of historical sites influences design choices.
Itinerary
We will visit Daulatabad Fort. It was the capital of the Yadava rulers of the region until the end of the 13th century CE. Later, visit the Bibi ka Maqbara tomb.
Day trip to Paithan, where we will learn about the famous Paithani weaves.
We will visit the Himroo Silk Weaving Center and visit Bidri for a factory tour to see the metal work done there.
