Laurie Baker Center
Laurie Baker Center: The Laurie Baker Center is a tribute to the innovative spirit and sustainable architectural principles of Laurie Baker, a renowned British-born Indian architect. Baker, often hailed as the "Gandhi of Architecture," was known for his eco-friendly and cost-effective designs that emphasized the use of local materials and traditional techniques.

  • Visiting the Laurie Baker Centre will provide an opportunity to witness firsthand the practical application of sustainable architectural principles and serve as an inspiration for architects, environmentalists, and enthusiasts interested in eco-friendly living spaces.
  • Students will be able to familiarize themselves with diverse architectural styles, from traditional Kerala architecture with its sloping roofs and wooden carvings to colonial-era buildings featuring ornate facades and arches.
  • Learn about eco-friendly architectural techniques and how these methods contribute to sustainable urban development.
  • Explore the colonial heritage of Trivandrum, understanding the architectural legacy left behind by the British, Dutch, and Portuguese.
  • Students will understand the fusion of cultural influences, including indigenous Kerala styles, colonial designs, and contemporary architectural trends.

Itinerary

Visit the Indian Coffee House, where you can meet people from different cultures. With the intention of expanding the domestic coffee market and establishing a strong coffee culture in the country, Indian Coffee came into existence. Evenings are free for self-exploration.


We will visit the Fisherman Colony for settlement studies. Then we will visit the Costford, one of the largest public buildings designed by Mr. Baker. and finally visit the Center for Development Studies, which is a self-governing institution.


We will start our day by going to Revathi Kala Mandir, which is an Indian film production company. Then head on to the Napier Museum. Later on, enjoy some time at Kovalam Beach. And lastly, explore the city on your own


Proceed to LBC for a full day workshop and presentations for all students. The students will be exposed to alternatives in architecture that are cost-effective, affordable, environment friendly and aesthetically appealing building construction techniques along with topics in habitat studies based on Laurie Bakers’ philosophy. Hands-on experience will be in masonry using mud, bricks and rubble.


Check out and proceed to the station to board the train for your return journey.
